May/June 2019 Swim Schedule

Hi everyone!

May/June 2019 swim lessons start May 1st on.
My swim program starts with students who learn to swim comfortably at the yurt pool, then "graduate" and go with me to the larger pool at aquatic center where they learn to swim in deep  water and continue with stroke refinement. This is through my private swim school, not through the Park District.
My current swimmers have the option of choosing times first, then I will open my schedule to new families.

YURT POOL    (for new and newer swimmers)
   BIAC swimmers scroll down...

3 students max per class
Here’s all you need to do:

  1. Choose which day(s) you'd like a lesson: Tuesdays or Wednesdays .Please select 1st and 2nd choice of days.
  2. Select the time you’d like to have your lesson. Please give me a 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice. As people sign up, fewer times will be available.
  3. Let me know if you’d like to have a lesson with a particular group of kids (i.e. neighbors, carpooling friends, etc). Each family must email me separately.
  4. Email me (islandcoopers@serv.net) as soon as you have made your selection as classes fill quickly.
  5. Include as many details about your child, schedule etc. I am detail oriented and want to make your scheduling as smooth as possible.
  6. After I have put you in my swim schedule, I will be emailing you a confirmation and  invoice.
  7. Please pay for session's tuition before or on the first day of class.
A quick reminder about monthly tuition: I charge by the session, not by the lesson. Your payment secures your spot in my schedule.

Make up lessons are on a SPACE ONLY basis and as a courtesy to my swimmers. I cannot guarantee a make up but I will try. There are no refunds if you miss a class. If I cancel a class due to illness or an emergency, you will be refunded or a lesson will be rescheduled.

Why am I waiting so long for lessons?

Hi Families,
Many of you have requested to be put on my wait list for swim lessons. I would love to be able to teach everyone who requests lessons but that's just not possible. I currently teach over 100 students a week.
These students start with me at a beginner level and leave my program when they pass the BIAC swim test. So you can see it is a process.
I am prioritizing older children first. These are the new beginner students who have fallen through the cracks of learning how to swim for one reason or another. These kids learn quickly and will be able to move through my program rapidly.

If your child is nearing 5 years old or older, please contact me to be put on the wait list. I am not adding younger students to the wait list at this time ( under 4 years old). The families who have already contacted me are on my list.

Thank you for your patience,
Kathy

Waiting for a Spot!

Hi Everyone!
A lot of you have been requesting lessons. THANK YOU so much for trusting me to teach your kids  this valuable life skill!
Let me explain how my program works so you don't think I am ignoring your requests!
Children start with me at the warm salt water yurt pool as beginners or almost beginners with none to low skills.
Swimmers stay with me until 1 of 2 things happen: the parents decide to leave the program or the child learns how to swim.
Once the child "graduates" from the yurt pool, they can transition with me as their instructor (through my independent program) to the aquatic center. At this time, they have all the necessary skills to go right into the deep end of the pool and can start learning about technique and endurance.
Happily, I have a lot of yurt graduates! And most of them wait until I have a spot for them at the aquatic center to transition. Therefore, I DO NOT take any NEW students directly to the aquatic center.
I teach approx. 101 students per week. It's only when one of these kids leave my program that I actually have an opening, which brings me back to your requests.

Thanks so much for your patience,
Kathy

The Importance Of Underwater Exhalation

Improving exhalation technique feels so good because:

- It rids the lungs and blood stream of CO2, the build-up of which is what leads to feelings of tension or even panic. Blow the CO2 out into the water and your swimming will feel much more relaxed.
- It makes swimming more aerobic by improving the gas exchange in your lungs.
- It means that when you do go to breathe, you only have to inhale, not exhale and inhale in the short window available to you.
- It reduces the buoyancy in your chest which helps keep your buoyancy balanced, bringing your legs up higher towards the surface.

Exhaling into the water sounds very basic but many swimming instructors have overlooked how important it is for good swimming technique. Try holding your breath for a few seconds while running or cycling and see just how bad it feels! This same principle applies to swimming.
